About Us

President Walthene Primus at Local 957's 50th anniversary party held at DC 37 headquarters on
July 22, 2006.

We work As Clerical Aides, Clerical Associates, Secretaries, City Seasonal Aides and Investigators. Local 957 members work in a variety of job titles and at different levels. This is just a brief description of who we are and how we help make this city run.

We work in The New York City Housing Authority.

Your Dues at Work

The union dues you pay to Local 957, entitle you to have representations and bargaining with the City of New York. This process is called Collective Bargaining. Your wages, hours, working conditions and fringe benefits are governed by collective Bargaining. Negotiated between District Council 37 and the City of New York. First DC 37 bargaining committees discuss and plan bargaining priorities and strategies. Then, they negotiate with management to achieve new contract new contract settlements.

In addition to Collective Bargaining, many other services are made available to you as a dues paying member. Member services such as negotiations, grievance handling and handling of arbitrations. The following are some additional services available to you as dues pay members:

Membership Services

Negotiations

On average, Local 957 negotiates two (2) contract agreements. These titles are as follows

  • Clerical Aides
  • Clerical Associate
  • City Seasonal Aide
  • Investigators
  • Secretaries

No one single person negotiates for the members of Local 957. Negotiating a good contract is a combined effort between your Local President, Chapter Chairs, research analyst, negotiators, union representatives and Local 957 Members who sit on Negotiating committee. Only by this collective effort and by working together, is your union able to successfully negotiate and appropriate contract for all Local 957 members.

Grievances - White Collar Division (212) 815-1060

Hundreds of grievances are processed by Local 957 Union and Grievance Representatives each year. Currently Local 957 has Union and Grievance Representatives who service the membership, in addition to one (1) Director and (1) Assistant Director. Your representatives are assigned to various locations, all throughout the 5 boroughs. The major duty of Local 957 representatives is to help the member file grievances arising from employer violations of collective bargaining agreements. Remember, Local 957 Union Representatives are advocates who speak on your behalf and make sure your rights as and employee are respected and enforced.

Arbitrations

It is also the duty of the union representative to work in conjunction with DC 37 Staff Attorneys in preparation for the arbitrations, throughout the entire process and until a decision is rendered. The union representative also prepares the member for possible testimony if needed. The arbitration process is a combined effort by the union representative, general council, and the union member and in many cases, the shop steward. When a decision is rendered, the arbitration becomes binding for all parties.
